History of the Stud

In about 1963 I began to look at mares and their records as I went around Shetland in my work. As I did not have land of my own to keep ponies on I had to wait until 1969 before I could purchase my first two foals. I had been impressed with a small stud (Tangwick) run by Nan Anderson in Eshaness. Here the ponies were the ponies I really liked, although each second year the mares had been put to a different stallion the foals seemed to have the same good qualities often winning prizes at the foal show prior to the Lerwick sale.
In 1971 I bought another filly, Goldie of Tangwick, from the Tangwick stud and she became my foundation mare. We have retained some of her progeny and their ongoing fillies throughout the years.
At first I used to take my mares to other peoples stallions but seemed to get nothing but colts. In 1975 I bought a colt called Richard of Murrion from a mating of a very good stallion and mare. He stayed with us until we let him go to bring new blood into the stud.
These ponies were around 36" in height and were mostly chestnuts. In recent years other colours have arrived and now we have bought some broken colours and different sizes, so we now breed small and standard ponies.
